That's what I take away from it. Another genre that can show the interior life of the character would be the Chinese Wuxia film. Just swap the songs of the musical for the fight choreography. The audience is not supposed to understand that people are actually breaking into choreographed song and dance routines*. All of my friends HATED Nine so I guess I'll have to check it out later and see what the fuss is about. This may not be any time soon, of course, since it's only later tomorrow that I'm getting around to seeing Avatar.
