This is a wonderful post, and partly for me because I work in policy in D.C. I have no idea what the situation looks like on the ground.

I am only thankful Glen Beck's ratings are getting ever lower. Although, I think it means it will be the crazies that cling to him as a fount of "wisdom," and keep getting more dangerous.

It's funny you mentioned that we are social animals. The only statement that I have ever been able to make across the board about human beings - not that men are more aggressive, or women can mother, none of that evo psych stuff - is that human beings are fundamentally social. I actually didn't know Plato said that until just now.

I think the president has done something _very_ very wrong. Congress needs to stand up on it's own two legs, roll up a news paper, and whap him on the nose.

The real problem is that it's pretty much a direct continuation of powers arrogated by presidents in the recent past. Sadly, congress and the American people have basically yawned and assured themselves (ourselves!) that the president won't dare use these powers against people who don't deserve it.

This is arguably a legitimate use of presidential war-making power. But then, we never declared war.

I'm actually more shocked and outraged that the president created a "deficit-reduction commission" over the objections of Congress. The President took over a job that is inarguablely congresses. We're seeing a melding of the executive and legislative branches-- a sure sign that we're slipping towards an authoritarian system.

I was wondering what your take would be. I'm still in shock and not sure how I feel about Obama now. I know I'd be more pissed if it were Bush, but Bush (as far as we can tell) didn't go this far.

[...] We don’t ordinarily think of politicians as having particularly difficult jobs. And yet… well, I’ve met these people. They work 16 hour days, try valiantly to learn copious amounts of complex information, and have to deal with some of the worst people on this planet. Every 2 years (for the House of Representatives), they can be made unemployed. In exchange, if they’re very lucky, once every generation or so they get the chance to do something that will alter the course of American history. Last Sunday was that chance.
I agree. I've only seen the demo for this game, but it was extremely well done. Everything about it, from the wonderfully detailed and realistic graphics, to the ambient sounds/music and interactions with the NPC's was all aiming at producing an emotional response... and I think that's definitely art - as much as making a movie, drawing a painting, or taking that perfect photograph.

I'm not sure if I'd be able to play that game myself... I wouldn't have the option of going into my son's room at night to hug him.

We'll see if devices like the iPad, Joo Joo, and the Nook become more popular, newspapers may be able to sell subscriptions that are exclusive to those devices -while providing some free content on the Internet.

Re: Radio ... commercial radio, for all its faults, has been free to use since the get go. Sure, you have to buy a radio, but you don't pay for the content. Public/community radio stations are the only ones that ask you to become a "member" so the content isn't shaped by an advertiser's preference.

Every job has an entry level. In other fields, you get paid even at the entry level, even as a "trainee". Come to think of it, in California, we didn't used to have to pay tuition until fairly recently. Indeed, tuition was instituted because Reagan wanted to <a href="http://www.trivia-library.com/c/biography-of-us-president-ronald-reagan-part-6-california-governor.htm"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">"get rid of the undesirables"</a>. It is difficult to make the case that internships aren't a form of class warfare by comparing them to a specific case of class warfare.

As far as doing internships in college... yup. I wish I'd had the chance. If I'd known that without an internship my degree would be worth a lot less, I would have taken out loans and done one. As it was, I instead worked 40hr weeks and graduated college nearly debt free.
